Sadly we have one again lost a valuable member of the club. Jim Grant died on 11th November aged 87. Jim joined the Janus when he re-started cycling after a lay off. He was always available to help out and marshal until recently and was made a life member as away of thanking him for his support. Several club members joined the large congregation at his funeral. Our condolences to Gladys and the family.
This time will be at the Vernon Arms, Poynton on Sunday 17th December at 1.00 pm.
The lunch will be free to club members. Still time to go if you tell Bill Bolton, his contatct is avaliable in the printed news letter. Bill needs to know your requirements for starters and the main meal (menu attached) so please let him know if you haven’t done yet.

It was mentioned at the AGM that a cine film used to exist of a Janus road race round the Chelford area. If you have a copy or know where one might be please let me know. I understand that cine film can be transferred onto modern media.
With the photo I showed last month (left) I said it had no connection with the club. How wrong I was. Pete Clayton got in touch to say it has his dad, Bill leading and Les Cooke in 9th place in their days in the Hyde Roads Club. I understand that racing started at Belle Vue for a short while before moving to Heaton Park.
Here is a picture of them on 9th October 1949 riding on the East Lancs road. Note only a single gear!
Around that time Bill and Les broke the Northern Road Records Association 50 mile record with a fabulous time of 1 hr 46 mins 55secs. These NNRA rides are usually a straight out 50 and this one started on the top of Bowes moor down to Greta Bridge then to Scotch Corner and then on to finish on the A1. Thanks again to Pete Clayton for the details.
This will be at the Vernon Arms, Poynton on Sunday 17th December at 1.00 pm.
The lunch will be free to club members. If you wish to go please advise Bill Bolton or E mail the club..
The MDTTA Christmas 10 takes place on Sunday 10th December 2017 on course J4/20 starting at 11.00am. The event includes a fancy dress section. Entry via the online entry system on the Cycling Time Trials web site or on a standard entry form to the organiser:- Dave Fearon to arrive by 28th November so plenty of time to enter. Entry is £8.00 solos & £16.00 tandems.
Last year we had 3 riding, in the past quite a few more. It would be nice if could do that again this year.
The club dinner and prize presentation will be on Saturday 27th January 2018 at the Alma Lodge Hotel, Stockport. Tickets are £20.00 each, a reduced price subsidised by the club. They will be available soon from Bill Bolton.
Please make every effort to support your club dinner as numbers are slowly going down and it may come to the point when we cannot continue with the event. Those attending in recent years have always made very positive comments on an enjoyable meal and evening.
Club Member of the Year
Your chance to nominate someone who in your opinion has contributed most to the club in the last year. It is not a racing award and will be decided by the number of vote received at or before the December meeting. Nominations can be made on the slip in the news sheet given or sent to Harry Fletcher or to me via E mail.
The weekly track leagues are running at the velodrome up until Christmas and then starting again in the new year. Registration for the Friday night MRTL will open in early December. Anyone wanting to ride will need to register quickly once it opens as places soon fill up. Check for registration dates.
There is a World Cup event at the Manchester Velodrome on 10/11/12 November. Most of the tickets have been sold but there should still be a few available. Go to

Hill Climb Result @Long Hill J9/13E 8 Oct
A good turnout this year with some great rides from Barry and Kyle, well done both of you.
Belle Vue 1946
This photo has nothing to do with the club, before we even started, but interesting. No idea of its history, just where and when.
The club hill climb will take place on Sunday 8h October, on Long Hill (course J9/13) starting at 11.00 am. Entry fee is £3.00 (I think) is payable at the start when collecting a number.
Meet in the lay-by on Long Hill short way out of Whaley Bridge. The starting point is on the A5002 Whaley Bridge to Buxton road just further up past the lay-by. The course is 4.2 miles long finishing just before the top of Long Hill.
If you are planning to take part in the hill climb and ride out, we usually meet at the Rising Sun, 0930 (normal club run time) and ride up to Long Hill from there.
Thanks to the Cheshire Roads Club for allowing us to use their even again this year.
Many congratulations to George and Janay Coghlan on the birth of their daughter, Florence Rose on 20th September. We wish you all well for a happy future.
The last club 25 of the year was the Stretford Wheelers 25 on J2/9 on 23rd September. Phil Robinson was our only rider and he recorded 58.52.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
It’s getting that time of year again, the Annual General meeting will be on Thursday 9th November, the evening that we would normally hold a monthly meeting. If there are any items or proposed rule changes please let me have them within the next few weeks so they can be included in the agenda.
Anything normally discussed at the monthly meeting can be covered after the AGM.
Annual Dinner and Prize Presentation
This will be on Saturday 27th January 2018 at the Alma Lodge Hotel Stockport. Please make a note of the date, more information from Bill Bolton soon.
The Fred Gratton open 25
A date of Saturday 9th June 2018 has been booked for our annual promotion. Hopefully it will go ahead without problems as this year’s event had to be cancelled due to roadworks.
Again, we will need lots of support from club members. If we cannot be sure in the future of enough support then there is every chance that very soon it will not take place. Please make a note of the date and reserve it.

All members are reminded that it is advisable to have insurance when out riding. This can be obtained in a number of ways. The most common way for cyclists is by being a member of either British Cycling or Cycling UK ( formerly the CTC). Both of these organisations will provide third party cover and importantly legal support in the event of an accident. There are also a number of specialised cycle insurance companies or it may be possible to add it onto you house insurance.
British Cycling can be contacted at britishcycling.org.uk/membership and Cycling UK at cyclinguk.org/membership

An order has now gone in for club clothing so if you have pre-ordered something delivery is expected on early November.
In the days when we were a sponsored club, don’t think much to the club tops,
not as nice as the ones we have now! Photo taken October 2000.
At the last club meeting we had a new member join us, he is:-
Kyle Fletcher, Harry’s grandson. Welcome Kyle, hopefully you will ride the hill climb and give your grandad another thrashing as you did last year riding as a guest.
The final 25 nominated as a club event for this year is the Stretford Wheelers 25 on Saturday 23rd September on course J2/9. Enter online or as per handbook.
Our other event for this year is the Club Hill Climb which will once again be the Cheshire Roads Club event on Sunday 8th October. The event is on Long Hill starting at 1100 and entry on the day. The starting point is on the A5002 Whaley Bridge to Buxton road just further up past the lay-by a short way out of Whaley Bridge. Park and meet in the lay-by. The course is 4.2 miles long finishing just before the top of Long Hill.
We had a poor turnout last year but there is every chance of improving on that this time round if we all make the effort to ride. Doesn’t have to be a sparkling performance, just put on a number, ride and get a time.
The Monday night ACT track league starts 4th September followed by the first of the Manchester Track events, the Premier League commences on Tuesday 3th October. The Division 1 League will start on Friday 6th October. This session of racing will continue until the first week of December.

Tickets are available for most sessions except Saturday night from trackworldcup.co.uk .The next Revolution meeting at Manchester is on 6th January 2018. Tickets on sale at cyclingrevolution.com
I hope to be able to place a further order for club clothing within the next few weeks. The order will for items specifically requested by members plus a small supply of additional popular items for stock. We cannot hold a very large quantity of stock as clothing is expensive and to obtain a discount a minimum sized order is needed. It is important therefore that if you want something now or in the near future that you say so in advance so your specific item(s) can be ordered. No use waiting until the stock has arrived and then expecting to get what you want, you may well be disappointed.
Have a look at the club shop www.yourclubshop.co.uk , password for club member is in the newsletter mailed to members.
Prices are plus VAT, less 30 % discount for over 10 items which we will have, less a discount of our own to members. We will applying a discount and advance orders will have a larger discount than the stock items.
If you are not sure of what size you need Impsport have a good sizing guide to their clothing available at:-
Let me know in the next couple of weeks what you want either by E mail or by contacting Pete (details in newsletter).

Marshalling @ Ashton
Our final stint of marshalling at the Ashton circuit is on TUESDAY this week, the 1st August. Help needed from about 6.00pm onwards. Many thanks to those you have been along to help out. We have had as usual a variety of different weather conditions but the assistance is most important to enable the race series to continue. By being involved we are entitled to use of the track for our own circuit race. This year’s was a bit of a failure due to a clash of dates but if we go ahead again next year we will have to ensure that BC gets its date fixing sorted out.
The summer lunch is next Sunday 6th August. It’s free to members so if you are quick you might still be able to get in. Mail us and we'll put you in touch with Bill

What a disaster, after the torrential rain last year Phil was forced to cancel this year’s event due to roadworks. The Chelford to Holmes Chapel road was closed due to resurfacing between Twemlow and the Terra Nova school, plus some more near Chelford church. Seven Sisters road was also being resurfaced and some water board work planned in Chelford village. After considering the alternatives of a different course or running a 10, Phil was left with no alternative but to cancel the event. He Emailed riders and rang marshals and fortunately only a couple of riders turned up.
This will take place on Sunday 6th August at the Royal Oak, High Lane. It’s free to members who book in advance. Bill Bolton is making the arrangements so if you would like to go please contact Bill on 01663 744474 or at email@example.com.
We will be on the usual club run stating at the Rising Sun at 09.30 first, returning to the Royal Oak in time for lunch. Make sure you book in advance with Bill so he will have an idea of numbers attending.

Banana Cake & Banana Skins
This cake is really easy to make, keeps well and is great to wrap up and take with you on the bike for some riding fuel. So says the BC webpage, but also make sure you don't slip up (sorry) by not knowing the new laps out rule...
Rules update: Laps out
Following changes last year to the regulations for taking laps out in circuit races, regulation 20.3.3 has now been replaced with:
20.3.3 Laps out are not permitted in circuit races.
The change has been ratified by the Technical Commission and approved by the British Cycling Board and applies with immediate effect. Please inform your club members.

In spite of all the concerns about our Annual Dinner and Prize Presentation due to low numbers it again took place on Saturday. It was attended by over 40 people, similar to last year and as far as I am aware all those present had a very enjoyable evening. The meal was up to the high standard we have come to expect in the pleasant surroundings of the Alma Lodge. Most of the prize winners were there including Robin Brennan, winner of the Vets standard in our open 25, who commented that he was really pleasantly surprised with our set up and pleased to be with us.
Many thanks again to Bill once more for the organisation to Harry for running the proceedings, and the Brocklehurst family for doing the raffle.
Another reminder for those who have not yet paid their subs for 2017.
Senior £12.00, (under 18 - £5.00), Social - £5.00.
To save on having to remember paying every year you can set up a Standing Order to make the payment.
Bank details are avaiailable in your newslatter or you can mail the club for details on how to pay. Please put your name in the ‘reference’ section so Chris knows who the payment is from. It would also be a good idea to send him an E mail just to say that you are going to pay this way.
He is still accepting cash or cheques if you don’t want to use a Standing Order. Please mail the club if you need any contatc details and we'll put you in touch.

Annual Dinner Dance & Prize Presentation
Saturday 28th January 2017
at the Alma Lodge, 149 Buxton Road, Stockport
The club dinner will be at the Alma Lodge and will be priced at £23.00 (£11.50 for under12s).
The main meal will be Lamb but alternatives of Chicken or Vegetarian are available provided they are ordered beforehand.
Tickets are available from Bill Bolton on 01663 744474 or from 38 Longlands Rd, New Mills, SK22 3BY. Please pay in advance if possible. (cheques should be made payable to ‘Janus Road Club’)
As in previous years, the raffle is an important part of the evening and prizes are welcome.
Meet 7.00 for a 7.30 start.
Over the last few years we have been struggling to get sufficient numbers attending to justify retaining the dinner. Should this continue it is very probable that this year could be the last time we have a Dinner and Prize Presentation in this format.
After 61 years of club dinners it would be a great shame if it all comes to an end. Please make a special effort to attend and support your club –
contact Bill and order your tickets NOW!!.

For the first time for a couple of years we will have someone riding as Chris Aimson has entered for the Friday nights. Good luck Chris, I hope you have been training!
The Christmas lunch was attended by 12 members and friends and proved once again to be very enjoyable at the Royal Oak, High Lane. Thanks Bill, another excellent venue.
Circuit Race 2017
Steve Harper is again promoting for us the ‘Blazing Saddles’ circuit race on the Ashton under Lyne circuit. It will take place on Saturday 8th April and will be a 3rd and 4th category event starting at 10.00 followed by a Ladies event at 11.30. Last year was disappointing as we had to cancel the Ladies race due to lack of entries. Hopefully this time we will do a little better as Steve has chosen a different date.
As always, help needed on the day, please contact Steve.
We have again agreed to support the race series at Ashton which will consist of 20 weekly events. Dates not finalised yet but they will be on Tuesday evenings.
