Following the recent order for club winter jackets which have been well received, it is now possible to order individual items if you wish direct from the Impsport web site.

This is at impsport.com . You will need the club password which I do not want to put on here but you can get it from Phil Robinson, Steve Harper or me. Single items will be charged at full rate but if there is sufficient interest we can place a bulk order to obtain a discount. Contact Steve first if you want anything.

Velodrome

The National Track Championships take place at the Velodrome between Friday 27th January and Sunday 29th January.

Track league racing starts again on Tuesday nights on 10th January & Friday nights on the 13th.

Cycle Jumble

Once again the cycle jumble will be on at the Velodrome. It takes place on Sunday 22nd January 2017 between 0900 am and 3.00 pm.

Club Clothing

Chris has done quite a lot of work on a possible re-design of club clothing. If you are on E mails you may have received details from him with some proposed designs. Please give him your comments so that we can discuss this further at the next meeting. I have already made use of his club logo as the header on this newssheet! New Member (sort of!!) Welcome to the Janus for David Flux. David joined us in August last year but I have only recently received his membership form. He rode several evening 10’s as a guest last year and will hopefully have a good season in 2016.

October 2016

Brian Gourley

Sadly once again we have lost another long standing member of the club. Brian Gourley died on 24th August aged 86. Brian joined the Janus in 1960 and was racing regularly until the 1990’s. He was club time trial champion four times (1972, 1973, 1974 & 1975), handicap champion five times and veterans champion on no less than thirteen occasions between 1972 and 1990. For a number of years he served as Time Trial Secretary organising the club event race programme. The club was represented at his funeral by seven members and ex-members who knew him well during time with us.

Stone Whlrs 25 J5/8 Phil Robinson 52.37 (new club record) 10 Sept

New Club Record

new club record Continuing his end of season form, Phil Robinson set a new club 25 mile record with a time of 52.37. Phil was riding in the Stone Wheelers 25 on 10th September on the J5/8 course. The record he broke had stood for 8 years. Congratulations Phil another great ride

A Wet Ride

I recently received some old copies of the Tricycle Association Gazette from Eric Farrar which contain some fascinating items. One I particularly like is from Spring 1960 and is a letter from the late great Dave Duffield ( he of Eurosport fame who was a tricyclist and held the End to End trike record).

Returning from a cycling club dinner Dave says:- ‘taking a short cut through the lanes we ran into no less than 11 floods – places where the water was up to the bottom bracket or over!. Eventually we rode through a 200 yard stretch, which deepened to cover the wheel spindles and half way up the wheel. At this point we reached a bridge, on which was a Dormobile, so we took the opportunity to warn him he wouldn’t get through, to which he replied that he was marooned – and it was worse on the other side! Well, we had to go on, so I rode into the brown lake and used the hedge tops as guidance… the water rose – over the spindles and axle, over the front lights, over the tops of the wheels, over the headset and dropped part of the ‘bars until I was ambling along with only the top tube, saddle and ‘bar tops above the water! Mick was forced to wade it, and promptly got soaked to the waist! Luckily it was only 15 miles home, so we hammered on to keep warm. So far no bad effects! Quite interesting to find ones front lamp reflector full of water and realise that my bidon of water was some 18 inches under water.”

September 2016

Stan Jones

It is with sadness that I have to record that Stan Jones died on 2nd August at the age of 90. Stan was a member of the Warrington Road Club and also a social member of the Janus for a great many years. Stan, ‘Crasher’ as he was often called for obvious reasons, became well known for a number of years for his provision and use of CB radios providing a results link between the timekeeper and race headquarters for a great many local timetrials. The use of mobile phones brought this to an end but sometimes with the poor reception in some of the village halls Stan’s system would at times be superior.

Tyre Pressures Pete Williams has found an interesting article in Velonews online about tyre pressures used by the professionals when riding in Paris Roubaix.
